Notable Instructors
Earl Hazelle,  colorist and palette knife artist,  Portland, Oregon  1964 - 1967

Barnstone Studios,  Copley, Pennsylvania   2001 - 2004   Myron Barnstone taught her
to use  the Golden Section in composition and also taught her the Fletcher method of color theory.
Ruth says that her time at the Barnstone Studios changed her life.

She credits her love of color  to Earl Hazelle, who would tell her that “colors
He taught her that a palette knife could have a touch as gentle as an “ant’s eyelash.”

Artist’s Statement
Roses and seascapes are among the subjects that Ruth paints, sometimes letting in a breath of
fresh air by branching out into non-representational work.  But, her strongest creative yearning is to faithfully
represent on canvas her deep emotional attachment to the landscape of the Pacific Northwest.

Her family has had a cabin in the mountains southeast of Mt. St. Helens for many years.
They  often drive on old logging roads, breathing in the high mountain air, watching for
elusive wildlife and for nature’s vistas that can surprise one around a bend in the road.

Plein air painting is becoming a passion for Ruth.  She finds that painting a scene on site, chasing
shadows and sunlight as they move fleetingly  across the landscape, demands a combination of training,
speed and concentration that she is unable to duplicate in studio work.
It results in an honesty that seems to speak for itself.

Ruth says that there are always more subjects to paint, more colors to mix and more things to learn.
That makes every day an adventure for her.
